Proxy Setup (iOS)

To complete the setup of your mobile device, you’ll need to install dataslayer mobile’s SSL certificate and set your device to use it as a proxy.

The SSL certificate only has to be installed the first time you use any given computer & mobile device combination.

The proxy setup will need to be updated any time your IP changes (i.e. moving your devices to a new network, or disconnecting and reconnecting from a single network.)

Installing the SSL certificate

First, let’s set up the SSL certificate that allows dataslayer mobile to view secure analytics requests. This certificate is dynamically generated on and specific to your computer, so it will not be verified by any certificate authority. This will cause a few warnings as you install it, but is required to ensure only your computer can inspect this traffic.

To get started, tap the Download SSL certificate link on the setup screen.

You will be prompted to install a ‘Profile’. Tap Install to continue.

You will now need to enter your passcode.

You’ll receive a warning about the certificate; tap Install to continue.

Tap Install again to confirm you know what you’re doing.

The dataslayer mobile SSL certificate is now installed!

Enabling the proxy

When you return to the setup page in your browser, note the Proxy IP and Proxy port settings. The Proxy IP is the address of your computer, and the port is where we’ll connect to it. The address may change if you switch networks or reconnect to a network. The port should almost always be 80.

Once you’ve noted these data points, open your Settings and tap Wi-Fi.

Tap the name of your wireless network.

Scroll to the bottom of your network’s settings and you’ll see a section for HTTP PROXY, which is likely defaulted to Off. You’ll need to:

  1. Switch this setting to Manual
  2. Enter the Proxy IP from earlier in the Server field
  3. Enter the Proxy port from earlier in the Port field
  4. Make sure Authentication is turned off

Trusting the SSL certificate (iOS 10.3 and above)

The final step is to trust the SSL certificate we installed earlier.

Return to Settings and navigate to General > About > Certificate Trust Settings, then make sure that dataslayer mobile is enabled.

After this step, your setup is complete and you can begin viewing tags!
